Fly Fishing Tools

These free tools answer three common questions when you are getting started in fly fishing. Choose the one that matches what you need to know:

Want a rough weight for a trout you have measured? Use the Trout Weight From Length Calculator.
Choosing a rod and line? Use the Fly Rod and Line Weight Matcher.
Not sure what tippet to tie your fly to? Use the Tippet and Fly Size Matcher.

Available tools

  • Trout Weight From Length Calculator

Enter a trout’s length, and its girth if you have it, to get an estimate of its weight. Real weights vary with the fish’s shape and condition, so treat the result as a guide.

Length alone is fine. Only measure girth if you can do it quickly with the fish in or just over the water, and wet your hands first.

  • Fly Rod and Line Weight Matcher

Suggests a starting rod weight, rod length and line based on the details you enter. It is a place to start, not a guarantee of the right fit.

Line weight is a number that describes how heavy a fly line is. Each rod is designed for a particular line weight.

  • Tippet and Fly Size Matcher

Suggests a starting X rating from your fly or hook size, the species you are targeting and the conditions you are fishing in.

Tippet is the thin, clear line your fly is tied to. Its X rating shows thickness: the higher the number, the thinner the tippet.
